A versatile city for young and old. Known for its ancient buildings. The miles of narrow streets with countless shops. The many fado houses with their own fado. The oldest university in Europe, not to forget the beautiful views over the River Mondego

Coimbra was once an important Roman settlement. The perfect central location in Portugal, at the Mondego River, with an open connection to the sea, made this city very popular. After the conquest by Alfons I, the first Portuguese King, she became the capital of Portugal. Many kings and other important persons were born and raised in this city. Coimbra has buildings that are nearly 1500 years old. There is an Aqueduct and under the former Roman forum (now the “Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro”) there are still foundations of a Cryptoporticus (a passage that provides underground access to the Forum) which can still be seen under this museum.

Today, Coimbra is still an ideal starting point for tourists to explore Central Portugal. In about half an hour drive you are on the beach at Figueira da Foz.
But to get a taste of Portuguese culture, you don't even have to leave the city. A stroll through the narrow miles of streets, between the ancient buildings and the countless shops, will give you an overwhelming impression of the rich Portuguese history. A drink in one of the Fado houses or on one of the many terraces, while you are entertained by the almost always present street musicians or entertainers. A delicious meal in one of the many (small) restaurants. For often less than 10 euros per person you already have a delicious daily menu with one of the many national dishes of Portugal.

Coimbra has one of the oldest universities in Europe (730 years), where students study from 70 nationalities. This makes Coimbra one of the most colorful cities in Portugal. The city is therefore also called “cidade dos estudantes” city of the students. Partly because of this, there are also many opportunities for young people in this city (sports, going out, events).

To get an idea of the whole country, it is highly recommended to visit “Portugal dos Pequenitos” Portugal in miniature. Here, all important buildings in Portugal have been recreated in miniature. The whole is specially made for the children and can therefore climb anywhere. In addition, there is also a clear explanation of the history of Portugal and objects of the many colonies that Portugal was rich are shown.

You can park your car near the river. Here you can often park for free or for a very low rate. A free pitch has been made for Campers, with all the necessary amenities.
